Deciding on a look for a wedding, a prom, a stage appearance or a new profile picture is easier when you can see it on your own face first. Add Makeup takes one portrait and paints on the look you describe in a sentence: a red lip with soft brows, a bronze smoky eye, a fresh dewy finish that reads as barely there. The makeup is blended into the skin tone and the direction of the light in the photo, so it sits on the face rather than floating on top. Bone structure, eye shape, hair, expression and background are carried through unchanged. It works for planning a look, previewing a product shade, or making a glam version of a plain snapshot.
Makeup look is the only field, and it takes free text. Write it the way you would tell a friend: name the areas (eyes, lips, cheeks, brows, skin), the colors, and the finish (matte, glossy, dewy, shimmer). Short and specific beats long and vague. 'Wine lipstick, gold shimmer on the lids, soft blush' will land closer than 'make me look nice'. You can also name a style, such as bridal, editorial, 90s grunge or K-beauty, and add the occasion. Leave out anything about the face shape itself, since the tool does not change features. Press Compare on the result to flip between the two frames and check how the blend sits in the light.
Once the made-up face is on the canvas, keep working. Edit with words to swap the lip color or soften the liner without starting over. About this tool
- What should I upload for the most convincing result?
- Choose a sharp portrait with even light on the face and little or no existing makeup. Front-facing or a slight angle, eyes open, hair off the face where possible. Heavy shadows and strong color casts make the blend harder to read. Phone selfies in daylight near a window tend to be ideal.
- Is there a way to preview a specific lipstick shade I already own?
- Name the shade as precisely as you can in the Makeup look field: 'deep brick red matte lipstick' or 'sheer coral gloss' gets you close. Brand names alone carry little meaning to the tool, so describe the color and finish instead. Compare against a swatch on your hand to judge the match.
- Do I need to describe every part of the face, or can I ask for just lips?
- Ask for as little or as much as you like. 'Red lipstick only, nothing else' keeps the rest of the face bare. Leaving areas unmentioned lets the tool complete a coherent look, so be explicit when you want something left alone. Short, specific sentences give the most predictable results.
- How is this different from Face Cleanup?
