Drag the handle: the uploaded photo on the left, what the tool made on the right.
The group picture where everyone smiled except one person. The headshot where you look tense. The passport-style frame that turned out stiff when a friendlier version was wanted for a team page. Expression Swap rewrites the look on a face while the person, their features, hair, clothing and background carry on unchanged. Pick a warmer or more serious mood and the tool moves the whole face together, so cheeks lift with the mouth and the eyes take part rather than staying frozen. That whole-face approach is what keeps the result believable. Use it for a profile picture, a speaker bio, a yearbook, a wedding album where one frame fell flat or a family portrait that needs a lighter mood.
Expression is a single select with eight options. Gentle Smile is a closed-lip warmth that suits business profiles and formal portraits. Big Smile shows teeth and reads as cheerful. Laughing goes further, with eyes narrowing and the head engaged. Serious removes the smile for an editorial or authoritative feel. Confident gives a composed, steady look with a hint of a smile. Surprised opens the eyes and brows. Thoughtful adds a reflective quality, and Playful brings a light, mischievous energy. Match the option to where the picture will live: a résumé wants Gentle Smile or Confident, a birthday collage can take Laughing. After the result appears, press Compare to flip between the two frames and judge whether the new expression fits the moment.
With the new expression on the canvas, the picture is ready for anything else the studio offers. Edit it with words to adjust the light or tidy the background, upscale it for print, or make a short video clip that starts from the new frame. It also pairs well with Smile Fixer when teeth show, or Face Cleanup for skin. Expression Swap costs 4 credits per run at Standard, 12 at Pro and 44 at Max, and each option change is a fresh run. Sign up and you receive 4 free credits to make a Standard result, with no card required, which is enough to test the option you have in mind on a real portrait.

About this tool
- Can I use a photo where the person is looking away from the camera?
- Three-quarter and profile views are fine as long as the mouth and at least one eye are visible. The tool rebuilds the expression from the angle it is given, so the head does not turn toward the lens. Fully hidden faces or very small faces in a wide picture give it little to work with.
- Which option should I pick for a LinkedIn-style profile picture?
- Gentle Smile is the safe choice: a closed-lip warmth that reads approachable without being casual. Confident is the alternative when you want composure with a hint of a smile, common in leadership and consulting profiles. Big Smile can work for friendly, client-facing roles. Serious suits legal and editorial contexts.
- Why does the tool change the eyes and cheeks when I only wanted a smile?
- Because a smile that stops at the mouth looks pasted on. Real expressions involve the whole face: cheeks lift, the lower lids rise, brows relax or move. Expression Swap moves those parts together so the result reads as a genuine moment. Features themselves, such as eye shape and nose, are not altered.
- Does it work with children and older adults?
- It does, across ages. Children's faces keep their proportions and older faces keep their lines; only the expression moves. Playful and Big Smile tend to suit kids' portraits, while Thoughtful and Gentle Smile often flatter older adults. Check with Compare that the mood matches the rest of the picture.
- Can I try Expression Swap before paying?
- Yes. A new account starts with 4 free credits, which covers your first Standard image with Expression Swap — no card required. After that, credits come from a monthly plan or a one-time pack.
