The look is the shallow depth of field you get from an expensive lens, applied after the fact to a phone snapshot. Use it on headshots for a company page, dating profile pictures, pet photos, a plated dish for a menu, or a family portrait where the scenery competes with the faces. Everything about the subject stays as it was: skin, hair, clothing, pose and expression are untouched, and the frame keeps its original size and composition.
There are no settings to choose here. The tool decides where the subject ends and the background begins, then applies a strong, creamy blur that grows softer with distance, the way real glass behaves. Hair strands, glasses frames and shoulder lines are traced so nothing halos or smears at the edge. When the result lands, press the Compare button and hold it to flip between what you uploaded and what was made; look at the edge of the hair and any hands or held objects, since those are the places a blur can go wrong. If a detail you wanted sharp went soft, run it again or tell the studio to keep that object in focus with a short edit.

About this tool
- Can I use a photo where the subject is far from the camera?
- Yes, but the effect is strongest when the subject is clearly separated from the scene behind them. A person filling half the frame blurs cleanly; a tiny figure on a wide beach gives the tool less to work with, and parts of the sand near their feet may stay sharp. Crop in first with Reframe & Expand if you want a tighter result.
- Will it keep small details like glasses, earrings and stray hair sharp?
- That is the goal. The blur is applied behind the subject, and edges around hair, frames and jewelry are traced rather than painted over. Fine strands against a bright sky are the hardest case; if a few go soft, run a second pass or ask for them to be kept crisp using Edit With Words.
- Why does the blurred photo look like it was taken with a better lens?
- Because the tool imitates shallow depth of field, the optical effect of a wide aperture. Objects farther from the subject blur more than objects close to them, and bright points in the background swell into soft discs. Phone cameras rarely produce this on their own, so the result reads as a more deliberate photo.
- Is there a way to blur only part of the background?
- Not with a slider, since this tool has no settings, but you can get there in two moves. Run Background Blur first, then open Edit With Words and describe what should return to focus, such as the sign on the left or the dog in the back. The studio reworks only that area.
